Home Fellowships

On one of his Healing for Today television programs broadcast on Trinity Broadcasting Network in 1984, John Wimber ended the program by saying:

"I think that probably the most crucial missing element in the church today is what we've been teaching on today: learning how to love. Learning how to really, generously care for other human beings, in very practical and pragmatic ways. Giving ourselves in care of and in love. And you can't do it in large churches and large situations. We have several thousand people that gather on Sunday in our fellowship. And you know, you're not gonna learn to love somebody you don't know who's sitting next to you. You've gotta do it in small housgroups. That's why we're so committed in our fellowship that every member should be in a small housegroup—where you can learn to love people that otherwise you wouldn't even like."

Home fellowships are a place where church really happens, where people get saved, healed, encouraged, equipped and discipled. They're where the phrase "body of Christ" becomes an experiential reality instead of just a theological concept. They're also the crucible where disciples are formed. And once formed, disciples can then take the blessing and power of the kingdom of God out into the world. The aim of our book Simple Kingdom: Home Fellowships is first, to get you thinking about what "church" actually is and what "doing church" should really look like—and then, to show you how you can "do church" in home fellowships.
